Job Summary
The Hospital Bed Manager is responsible for the effective management and allocation of inpatient beds throughout the hospital, ensuring optimal patient flow and minimizing delays in admissions, transfers, and discharges. This role is crucial in coordinating with various departments to balance the demands of patient care with the availability of resources, thereby maximizing bed utilization and ensuring that patients receive timely access to necessary services.
The Hospital Bed Manager works closely with clinical and administrative teams, including nursing staff, physicians, and discharge coordinators, to monitor bed occupancy and predict demand. This role involves making real-time decisions about bed assignments, taking into consideration patient acuity, isolation requirements, and the specific needs of different clinical areas.
In addition to day-to-day bed management, the Hospital Bed Manager is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to improve patient flow, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance overall operational efficiency. This includes analyzing data on bed occupancy and patient flow patterns, identifying trends and potential issues, and collaborating with other hospital leaders to develop solutions.
The role also involves managing communication between departments to ensure that all staff are aware of bed availability and patient movement plans. The Hospital Bed Manager must be able to quickly and effectively resolve conflicts and issues related to bed assignments, ensuring that patient care is not compromised.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure are essential for this role, as the Hospital Bed Manager must constantly balance competing priorities in a dynamic environment. This position requires a deep understanding of hospital operations, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of healthcare professionals to ensure the smooth functioning of inpatient services.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership:
• Lead the bed management team in coordinating bed assignments and patient placements across all inpatient units.
• Serve as the central point of contact for all bed-related inquiries and decisions, providing guidance and support to nursing staff, physicians, and administrative teams.
Strategic Development
• Provide clear and concise leadership for the team to ensure that all facilities are outstanding environments, which are safe for the use of staff to the highest quality delivery of services to patients and external visitors.
• Responsible for delivering excellent patient focused facilities, which take into account any staff and any feedback from staff and patients.
• Develop and implement strategies to improve patient flow and bed utilization, reducing delays inpatient admissions and discharges.
• Analyze trends in bed occupancy and patient flow to identify areas for improvement and develop action plans.
Governance
• Ensure that bed management practices comply with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and patient safety standards.
• Develop and maintain protocols for bed allocation, taking into account patient acuity, isolation requirements, and departmental needs.
• Ensure correct governances arrangements, which include the management of finance and regulatory activity where appropriate.
• Making sure that all facilities functions comply with the governance standards.
• Ensuring that all facilities processes follow the correct guidelines from a governance standpoint.
Other Responsibilities
• Monitor and manage bed occupancy levels in real-time, making adjustments as needed to accommodate changes in patient volume.
• Coordinate with discharge planning teams to facilitate timely patient discharges and create capacity for incoming patients. Provide regular updates to management and the board.
• Collaborate with the relevant bodies to ensure that any external monetary funding opportunities from external sources are explored.
• To maintain the hospital has a clear and effective emergency response process with clear guidelines on how this is executed.
• Continue to work and develop to acquire further skills appropriate to the post where necessary. This could be in the form of extra educational qualifications/accreditations.
• Ensuring clinical practice is based on validated research, and participating in quality assessment, research and clinical audits
• In collaboration Head of Nursing and the Chief Nursing Officer, upholds the code of conduct and professional scope of practice of the nursing profession
Equality and Diversity
• Act as lead for Equality & Diversity in the hospital to ensure the development and effective implementation of a strategy, set of policies, procedures and monitoring and control systems are in place.
Personal and Staff Development
• Work with HR to undertake recruitment, retention, performance management and development of staff in the team.
• Work with the Recruitment Manager to establish connections with appropriate local, international and online communities to nurture a pipeline of talent to support the growth of the company.
• Responsible for development of high potential employees, providing a structured approach to mentoring and developing critical talent at all levels of management.
Communications And Working Relationships
• Collaborate with clinical and administrative teams, including nursing staff, physicians, and department heads, to ensure efficient patient flow.
• Communicate effectively with all stakeholders regarding bed availability, patient movement plans, and any issues affecting bed management.
• Collaborate with the COO and divisional Heads to determine short and long term needs of AMCE.
• Develop and present updates to the Board of Directors.
Line Management
• Line manage staff members within the department.
• Develop and maintain the department with the appropriate mix of business knowledge and technical skills required to achieve strategic objectives and ensure the core functions of the department are reliable, stable and efficient.
• Provide strong leadership to develop, coach and ensure a high performing team.
• Supervise the bed management team, including performance evaluations, professional development, and scheduling.
• Provide training and support to staff on bed management procedures and protocols.
• Establish the department goals, objectives and operating procedures.
Organizational Responsibilities
• Report to the Director of Operations, contributing to hospital-wide initiatives to improve patient flow and operational efficiency.
• Participate in hospital committees focused on patient care, flow, and resource management.
• Work with the senior management team to look for new facilities or sector related improvements.
• Provide solutions and services to the business that retain and increase a competitive advantage within the sector.
• Evaluate, select, and implement new technology/ systems needed to support the organization in reaching its strategic objectives.
Confidentiality
The post holder must be aware that Confidential Information and data to which the post holder will have knowledge and access to in the course of their employment with the AMCE is to be kept confidential, and this confidentiality is a condition of employment. The duty to maintain confidentiality continues even when the post holder is no longer employed.
This information is not to be shared with anyone outside of the AMCE under any circumstances, except to the extent necessary to fulfil any duties and responsibilities required within the role. Furthermore, upon termination with the AMCE Abuja, the post holder will return to the AMCE all confidential information held.

The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to make to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role. These requirements are set out in the AMCE Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures, which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training. Qualifications Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid nursing license.
Advanced degree or equivalent experience in emergency practice.
Specialized training or certification relevant to the role
Meet all requirement to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria Masters in related subject
Professional qualification in a relevant subject
Experience Significant clinical experience in the relevant specialty (5 years).
Experience of working in an acute setting and managing flow Experience of managing at hospital level

Previous Hospital Bed Management experience
