About The Role

Job Summary

As a Senior Practice Development Nurse, your primary responsibility is to oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of staff development within designated teams. You will identify learning needs, coordinate training programs, and continuously assess staff competence to align with local and national priorities. Promoting high standards of care through clinical expertise, you'll foster a positive learning environment, supporting induction, education, and ongoing professional development for all nursing staff levels. Collaborating with the Academy team and service managers, you'll ensure workforce strategies are aligned, while also providing mentorship, developing learning materials, and contributing to conferences and workshops. Your role contributes significantly to improving patient care standards, safety, and the overall development of nursing services.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Independently manages workload with initiative and discretion, accountable within Trust policies and procedures, without direct supervision.
  • Provides feedback and educational counselling to nursing staff regarding their professional and personal development, collaborating with the lead educator and ward manager to formulate personal development plans and portfolios.
  • Collaborates with senior nurses, Matron, and Lead Practice Educator to establish standards and guidelines for best practice within specialty areas.
  • Acts as an expert resource for healthcare professionals, offering specialist clinical advice, guidance, and support, initiating and directing best practices while serving as a professional role model.
  • Safeguards the health, safety, and welfare of staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Assumes responsibility for staff training in the use of key equipment within specialty medicine areas.

Strategic Development

  • Collaborates with senior management to align staff development initiatives with organizational goals and strategic priorities.
  • Identifies emerging trends and changes in nursing standards, translating them into actionable plans within designated service areas.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of long-term workforce strategies to meet evolving healthcare needs.
  • Participates in strategic planning meetings to provide insights and recommendations for enhancing nursing practice and staff development.

Governance

  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, professional standards, and Trust policies related to staff development and training.
  • Facilitates the integration of governance principles into practice, promoting accountability, transparency, and quality improvement.
  • Participates in audits and inspections related to staff competence, training records, and adherence to best practices.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to address governance issues and implement corrective actions as needed.

Other Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and mentorship to nursing staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.
  • Coordinates and delivers educational programs, workshops, and training sessions to address learning needs and enhance clinical competencies.
  • Develops and maintains educational resources and materials to support ongoing staff development.
  • Acts as a liaison between nursing teams, the Academy, and other stakeholders to facilitate communication and knowledge sharing.
  • Represents the nursing department in meetings, committees, and forums related to education, training, and professional development.
  • Ensuring clinical practice is based on validated research, and participating in quality assessment, research and clinical audits
  • In collaboration Head of Nursing and the Chief Nursing Officer, upholds the code of conduct and professional scope of practice of the nursing profession

    Equality and Diversity

  • Act as lead for Equality & Diversity in the Estates and Facilities department to ensure the development and effective implementation of a strategy, set of policies, procedures and monitoring and control systems are in place.

Personal and Staff Development

  • Work with HR to undertake recruitment, retention, performance management and development of staff in the team.
  • Work with the Recruitment Manager to establish connections with appropriate local, international and online communities to nurture a pipeline of talent to support the growth of the company.
  • Responsible for development of high potential employees, providing a structured approach to mentoring and developing critical talent at all levels of management.

Communications And Working Relationships

  • Coordinate and facilitate consultations with stakeholders within healthcare teams to define learning and development requirements for ongoing improvements in clinical practice.
  • Establish credibility as a proactive senior leader and change agent, demonstrating a sound understanding of the organization's objectives and goals related to staff development.
  • Collaborate with Chief Nursing Officers (CNOs) and department heads to determine short and long-term learning needs of nursing staff.
  • Develop and present updates on staff development initiatives to the Nursing Board or relevant governing bodies, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities.

    Line Management

  • Provide direct supervision and guidance to all nursing staff members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.
  • Develop and maintain nursing teams with the appropriate mix of clinical knowledge and technical skills to achieve strategic objectives and ensure reliable, stable, and efficient patient care delivery.
  • Provide strong leadership to develop, coach, and support the professional growth of nursing staff, ensuring a high-performing team.
  • Establish departmental goals, objectives, and operating procedures to guide nursing staff development activities and ensure alignment with organizational priorities.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the senior management team to identify emerging trends and improvements in nursing practice.
  • Provide solutions and services to enhance nursing care delivery, retaining and increasing a competitive advantage within the healthcare sector.
  •  Evaluate, select, and implement new technology/systems within nursing practice to support the organization in reaching its strategic objectives, promoting excellence in patient care and staff development.

Confidentiality

The post holder must be aware that Confidential Information and data to which the post holder will have knowledge and access to in the course of their employment with the AMCE is to be kept confidential, and this confidentiality is a condition of employment. The duty to maintain confidentiality continues even when the post holder is no longer employed.

This information is not to be shared with anyone outside of the AMCE under any circumstances, except to the extent necessary to fulfil any duties and responsibilities required within the role. Furthermore, upon termination with the AMCE Abuja, the post holder will return to the AMCE all confidential information held.

General

The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and well-being and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

To observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of AMCE together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.

To observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients, staff and visitors.

To be responsible, with management support, for their own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.

The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to make to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role. These requirements are set out in the AMCE Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures, which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training. These standards must be strictly complied with at all times.

About Us

African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced the commencement of its African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) project in Abuja, Nigeria. It will provide world-class care to both low and high-income patient groups across the continent. The AMCE in Partnership with King's College Hospital London will be located in Abuja, which is a hub for travel in Nigeria and West Africa, enabling it to attract patients across the region.
