About The Role

Job Summary

The Occupational Health Nurse Manager is responsible for overseeing the hospital’s occupational health program, ensuring the health and safety of employees through comprehensive health assessments, risk management, and wellness initiatives. This role is critical in managing the prevention, identification, and treatment of work-related illnesses and injuries, as well as promoting overall employee health and well-being.
 
The Occupational Health Nurse Manager is tasked with developing and implementing policies and programs that comply with health and safety regulations, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. This includes conducting regular health assessments, managing immunization programs, and leading efforts to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses.
 
In addition to clinical responsibilities, the Occupational Health Nurse Manager plays a key role in managing the hospital’s response to workplace health issues, such as outbreaks of infectious diseases, exposure to hazardous materials, and ergonomic challenges. This involves coordinating with other departments, including human resources, safety, and administration, to ensure that health risks are mitigated and that employees receive appropriate care and support.
The Occupational Health Nurse Manager is also responsible for health education and promotion, developing and delivering programs aimed at improving employee health, such as smoking cessation, weight management, and stress reduction programs.
 
This role requires a proactive approach to identifying health risks and opportunities for improvement, as well as a strong commitment to fostering a culture of health and safety within the hospital.
As a leader, the Occupational Health Nurse Manager supervises a team of occupational health nurses and support staff, providing guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. This role requires strong leadership skills, excellent communication abilities, and a deep understanding of occupational health practices.
 
The Occupational Health Nurse Manager must work closely with employees, managers, and external partners to ensure that the hospital provides a safe and healthy work environment. This position requires the ability to manage multiple priorities, the capacity to respond quickly to health-related incidents, and a dedication to promoting the health and well-being of all hospital staff.

Key Responsibilities 

Leadership: 
Lead and manage the occupational health nursing team, including nurses, health and safety officers, and support staff.
Provide clinical guidance and support to ensure high standards of care and compliance with occupational health regulations.
Promote a culture of health, safety, and well-being across the hospital, ensuring that employees have access to necessary resources and support.
Strategic Development 
Develop and implement a comprehensive occupational health strategy, aligned with the hospital’s overall mission and objectives.
Identify key health risks within the hospital workforce and develop targeted interventions to mitigate these risks.
Lead initiatives to promote employee wellness, such as vaccination programs, health screenings, and mental health support services
Responsible for delivering excellent patient focused facilities, which take into account any staff and any feedback from staff and patients.

Governance 
Ensure compliance with all relevant occupational health regulations, including those related to workplace safety, infection control, and employee health screening.
Oversee quality assurance programs within the occupational health department, including regular audits and performance reviews.
Manage the hospital’s response to workplace injuries and illnesses, including coordinating care, managing workers’ compensation claims, and facilitating return-to-work programs.
Ensure correct governances arrangements, which include the management of finance and regulatory activity where appropriate. 
Making sure that all facilities functions comply with the governance standards.
Ensuring that all facilities processes follow the correct guidelines from a governance standpoint. 

Other Responsibilities
Oversee the management of employee health records, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with relevant data protection regulations.
Coordinate occupational health assessments, vaccinations, and health promotion activities for hospital staff.
Collaborate with human resources and other departments to support employee health and safety initiatives.
Provide regular updates to management and the board.
Continue to work and develop to acquire further skills appropriate to the post where necessary. This could be in the form of extra educational qualifications/accreditations. 

Equality and Diversity
Act as lead for Equality & Diversity in the Estates and Facilities department to ensure the development and effective implementation of a strategy, set of policies, procedures and monitoring and control systems are in place.

Personal and Staff Development
Work with HR to undertake recruitment, retention, performance management and development of staff in the team. 
Work with the Recruitment Manager to establish connections with appropriate local, international and online communities to nurture a pipeline of talent to support the growth of the company.
Responsible for development of high potential employees, providing a structured approach to mentoring and developing critical talent at all levels of management.

Communications And Working Relationships
Collaborate with HR, safety officers, and department heads to ensure that occupational health services are integrated into overall employee wellness strategies.
Communicate effectively with employees, providing education on health risks, wellness programs, and preventive measures.
Establish credibility throughout the organisation and set an example as a proactive senior leader and change agent who earns respect by demonstrating a sound understanding of the departments’ objectives and goals.

Line Management
Collaborate with HR, safety officers, and department heads to ensure that occupational health services are integrated into overall employee wellness strategies.
Communicate effectively with employees, providing education on health risks, wellness programs, and preventive measures.
Line manage all staff members in the department.  
Develop and maintain the department with the appropriate mix of business knowledge and technical skills required to achieve strategic objectives and ensure the core functions of the department are reliable, stable and efficient.
Provide strong leadership to develop, coach and ensure a high performing team.
Establish the department goals, objectives and operating procedures.

Organizational Responsibilities
Report to the Director of Human Resources or Chief Nursing Officer, contributing to the development and implementation of the hospital’s employee health and wellness programs.
Participate in hospital-wide committees and initiatives focused on workplace safety, employee well-being, and occupational health standards.
Work with the senior management team to look for new or sector related improvements. 
Evaluate, select, and implement new technology/ systems needed to support the organization in reaching its strategic objectives. 


Confidentiality
The post holder must be aware that Confidential Information and data to which the post holder will have knowledge and access to in the course of their employment with the AMCE is to be kept confidential, and this confidentiality is a condition of employment. The duty to maintain confidentiality continues even when the post holder is no longer employed.

This information is not to be shared with anyone outside of the AMCE under any circumstances, except to the extent necessary to fulfil any duties and responsibilities required within the role. Furthermore, upon termination with the AMCE Abuja, the post holder will return to the AMCE all confidential information held.

The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and well-being and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

To observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients, staff and visitors. 

To be responsible, with management support, for their own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.

Infection Control Statement 
The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to make to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role. These requirements are set out in the AMCE Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures, which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training. These standards must be strictly complied with at all times.

ESSENTIAL

DESIRABLE
Qualifications Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid nursing license.

Advanced degree or equivalent experience in emergency practice.

Specialized training or certification relevant to the role 

Meet all requirement to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria Masters in related subject

Professional qualification in a relevant subject



Experience Significant clinical experience in the relevant specialty (5 years).
Experience of working in an acute setting 
Experience of managing at hospital level

Previous Occupational Management experience 

Extended clinical skills to include: Venepuncture & Cannulation

About Us

African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced the commencement of its African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) project in Abuja, Nigeria. It will provide world-class care to both low and high-income patient groups across the continent. The AMCE in Partnership with King's College Hospital London will be located in Abuja, which is a hub for travel in Nigeria and West Africa, enabling it to attract patients across the region.
