Key Responsibilities
As a General Surgeon, you will be responsible for a wide range of duties that are essential to the smooth functioning of the General Medical and Surgical Services department. Your key responsibilities will include:
• Performing complex surgical procedures to treat various medical conditions, including but not limited to general surgery, oncological surgery, and trauma surgery.
• Conducting thorough pre-operative assessments to evaluate patients' medical history, current condition, and surgical risks.
• Developing comprehensive surgical plans in collaboration with other medical specialists to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.
• Providing clear and concise explanations to patients and their families regarding surgical procedures, risks, and expected outcomes.
• Obtaining informed consent from patients prior to performing surgical procedures.
• Ensuring that the operating room environment is sterile and that all necessary equipment and instruments are available and functioning properly.
• Supervising and coordinating the activities of the surgical team, including nurses, anesthesiologists, and other support staff, to ensure efficient and effective patient care.
• Monitoring patients' post-operative progress and providing appropriate follow-up care to ensure optimal healing and recovery.
• Collaborating with other medical specialists, such as oncologists, cardiologists, and radiologists, to provide comprehensive care for patients with complex medical conditions.
• Participating in regular departmental meetings to discuss patient cases, share best practices, and identify areas for improvement.
• Staying up to date with the latest surgical techniques, technologies, and research to ensure that patients receive the most effective and evidence-based care.
• Providing mentorship and guidance to junior surgeons and medical students to support their professional development and contribute to the growth of the medical community.
• Maintaining accurate and detailed patient records, ensuring compliance with all relevant medical and legal regulations.
• Actively participating in quality improvement initiatives and research projects to enhance patient outcomes and contribute to the advancement of surgical care.
• Representing the organisation at professional conferences, workshops, and other events to promote the organisation's reputation and share knowledge with the wider medical community.

As a General Surgeon, you will be required to communicate and collaborate with a wide range of individuals and departments within the organization, as well as external stakeholders. Your communication and working relationships will include:

• Collaboration with the medical records department to ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient information.
• Regular communication with the human resources department to address any staffing or personnel issues within the department.
• Collaboration with the finance department to manage departmental budgets and ensure cost-effective use of resources.

Confidentiality
The post holder must be aware that Confidential Information and data to which the post holder will have knowledge and access to in the course of their employment with the AMCE is to be kept confidential, and this confidentiality is a condition of employment. The duty to maintain confidentiality continues even when the post holder is no longer employed.
This information is not to be shared with anyone outside of the AMCE under any circumstances, except to the extent necessary to fulfil any duties and responsibilities required within the role. Furthermore, upon termination with the AMCE Abuja, the post holder will return to the AMCE all confidential information held.

Infection Control Statement
The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role. These requirements are set out in the AMCE Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures, which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training. These standards must be strictly always complied with.

Qualifications Medical degree from an accredited institution
Completion of a residency / Fellowship program in general surgery from a busy accredited institution.
Board certification or equivalent in general surgery.
Full Registration with Medical Council with license to practice in home country.
Meet all requirement for registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). Advanced training in a surgical subspecialty
Master's degree in healthcare administration or business
Experience 5+ years of experience as a consultant general surgeon in a busy hospital
Experience in a high-volume surgical practice
Experience in a teaching or academic medical center
Management and Leadership Proven track record of leading and managing a team of medical professionals
Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
