Key Responsibilities 

As a General Surgeon, you will be responsible for a wide range of duties that are essential to the smooth functioning of the General Medical and Surgical Services department. Your key responsibilities will include:

Performing complex surgical procedures to treat various medical conditions, including but not limited to general surgery, oncological surgery, and trauma surgery.
Conducting thorough pre-operative assessments to evaluate patients' medical history, current condition, and surgical risks.
Developing comprehensive surgical plans in collaboration with other medical specialists to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.
Providing clear and concise explanations to patients and their families regarding surgical procedures, risks, and expected outcomes.
Obtaining informed consent from patients prior to performing surgical procedures.
Ensuring that the operating room environment is sterile and that all necessary equipment and instruments are available and functioning properly.
Supervising and coordinating the activities of the surgical team, including nurses, anesthesiologists, and other support staff, to ensure efficient and effective patient care.
Monitoring patients' post-operative progress and providing appropriate follow-up care to ensure optimal healing and recovery.
Collaborating with other medical specialists, such as oncologists, cardiologists, and radiologists, to provide comprehensive care for patients with complex medical conditions.
Participating in regular departmental meetings to discuss patient cases, share best practices, and identify areas for improvement.
Staying up to date with the latest surgical techniques, technologies, and research to ensure that patients receive the most effective and evidence-based care.
Providing mentorship and guidance to junior surgeons and medical students to support their professional development and contribute to the growth of the medical community.
Maintaining accurate and detailed patient records, ensuring compliance with all relevant medical and legal regulations.
Actively participating in quality improvement initiatives and research projects to enhance patient outcomes and contribute to the advancement of surgical care.
Representing the organisation at professional conferences, workshops, and other events to promote the organisation's reputation and share knowledge with the wider medical community. 

Main Responsibilities:

Communications And Working Relationships
As a General Surgeon, you will be required to communicate and collaborate with a wide range of individuals and departments within the organization, as well as external stakeholders. Your communication and working relationships will include:

Regular communication with patients and their families to discuss medical conditions, treatment options, and surgical procedures.
Collaboration with other medical specialists, such as oncologists, cardiologists, and radiologists, to provide comprehensive patient care.
Regular communication with the nursing staff to ensure seamless patient care and address any concerns or issues that may arise.
Collaboration with the anaesthesiology team to ensure safe and effective surgical procedures.
Regular communication with the operating room staff to ensure the availability of necessary equipment and supplies.
Collaboration with the pharmacy department to ensure the appropriate use of medications and manage any potential drug interactions or side effects.
Regular communication with the laboratory and radiology departments to obtain necessary test results and imaging studies.
Collaboration with the infection control team to ensure compliance with infection prevention protocols and monitor for any potential outbreaks.
Regular communication with the quality improvement team to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions.
Collaboration with the medical records department to ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient information.
Regular communication with the human resources department to address any staffing or personnel issues within the department.
Collaboration with the finance department to manage departmental budgets and ensure cost-effective use of resources.
Regular communication with the information technology department to address any technical issues or implement new technologies.
Collaboration with the marketing and public relations team to promote the organization's surgical services and reputation.
Regular communication with professional organizations and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with industry standards and guidelines.

Line Management
Developing and implementing departmental policies and procedures to ensure consistent and high-quality patient care.
Setting and monitoring departmental goals and objectives and ensuring that they align with the organization's overall strategic plan.
Evaluating the performance of direct reports and providing feedback and coaching to support their professional development.
Identifying training and development needs within the department and implementing appropriate training programs.
Managing staffing levels and ensuring that the department is adequately staffed to meet patient demand.
Overseeing the recruitment and selection process for new hires within the department.
Addressing any personnel issues or conflicts within the department and taking appropriate corrective actions.
Ensuring that all staff members are aware of and adhere to relevant medical and legal regulations.
Promoting a positive and inclusive work environment that fosters teamwork, collaboration, and open communication.
Representing the department in management meetings and contributing to the overall strategic direction of the organization.
Monitoring departmental budgets and ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
Identifying opportunities for process improvement and implementing changes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Collaborating with other departments to ensure seamless patient flow and minimize delays in care.
Advocating for the department's needs and securing necessary resources to support patient care and staff development.
Serving as a role model for professionalism, ethical conduct, and patient-centered care.

Confidentiality
The post holder must be aware that Confidential Information and data to which the post holder will have knowledge and access to in the course of their employment with the AMCE is to be kept confidential, and this confidentiality is a condition of employment. The duty to maintain confidentiality continues even when the post holder is no longer employed.

This information is not to be shared with anyone outside of the AMCE under any circumstances, except to the extent necessary to fulfil any duties and responsibilities required within the role. Furthermore, upon termination with the AMCE Abuja, the post holder will return to the AMCE all confidential information held.


General
The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and well-being and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role. These standards must be strictly always complied with.

Qualifications Medical degree from an accredited institution

Completion of a residency / Fellowship program in general surgery from a busy accredited institution.

Board certification or equivalent in general surgery.

Full Registration with Medical Council with license to practice in home country.

Meet all requirement for registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). Advanced training in a surgical subspecialty

Master's degree in healthcare administration or business
Experience 5+ years of experience as a consultant general surgeon in a busy hospital

Experience in a high-volume surgical practice

Experience in a teaching or academic medical center
Management and Leadership Proven track record of leading and managing a team of medical professionals

Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to foster a positive and collaborative work environment

About Us

African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced the commencement of its African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) project in Abuja, Nigeria. It will provide world-class care to both low and high-income patient groups across the continent. The AMCE in Partnership with King's College Hospital London will be located in Abuja, which is a hub for travel in Nigeria and West Africa, enabling it to attract patients across the region.

The African Medical Centre of Excellence will be implemented in four phases over a six-year period, starting with a 170-bed specialist hospital before expanding to a 500-bed facility. The centre will have the potential to provide services to over 200,000 patients in Nigeria and a further 150,000 patients from neighbouring West African countries within its first five years of operation.

The clinical areas the centre will specialise in Cardiology, Haematology and Oncology.
