About The Role

Job Summary

The Gynaecologists/Colposcopy Surgeons are specialized medical professionals dedicated to diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of gynaecological conditions, with a particular focus on cervical pathologies and abnormalities detected through colposcopy. These experts play a crucial role in women's health by providing comprehensive care, including routine gynaecological examinations, cancer screening, colposcopic evaluations, and surgical interventions to manage abnormal cervical cytology and pre-cancerous conditions. They are responsible for performing diagnostic procedures, such as biopsies, loop electrosurgical excision procedures (LEEP), and laser treatments, as well as more advanced surgeries, including hysterectomies and other complex gynaecological surgeries.

In this role, Gynaecologists/Colposcopy Surgeons offer personalized treatment plans that align with best practices and the latest clinical guidelines, aiming to achieve optimal patient outcomes. They are skilled in interpreting colposcopy findings and histopathological results, ensuring early detection and intervention of cervical cancer and other gynaecological malignancies. Additionally, they provide patient-centred care by offering education and counselling on reproductive health, cervical cancer prevention, sexual health, and fertility options.

The Gynaecologists/Colposcopy Surgeons work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and nursing staff, to coordinate and deliver comprehensive patient care. They are committed to maintaining high standards of clinical practice through continuous professional development, involvement in research, and quality improvement initiatives. Their role is vital in advancing women's health by delivering compassionate, expert care and promoting early detection and effective management of gynaecological conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Lead a multidisciplinary team in providing comprehensive gynecological care, particularly in the management of cervical abnormalities.
  • Mentor and provide training to junior doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals in colposcopy and related gynaecological procedures.
  • Act as a clinical expert, contributing to the development of departmental policies, protocols, and standards of care.
  • Foster a culture of patient safety, quality improvement, and continuous learning within the department.

Strategic Development

  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance gynaecological services, particularly colposcopy and cervical screening programs.
  • Collaborate with senior management to align gynaecological services with the overall strategic goals of the organization.
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives to expand service offerings and improve patient outcomes.
  • Engage in clinical research and innovation to enhance service delivery and contribute to advancements in gynaecological care.

    Governance

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant clinical guidelines, regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Lead audits and reviews of clinical practice to monitor quality and safety, addressing any areas of concern promptly.
  • Participate in governance meetings, providing expertise and insights on gynaecological and colposcopy practices.
  • Implement and oversee clinical governance processes, ensuring all patient care is delivered in line with best practices.

    Other Responsibilities

  • Conduct outpatient clinics, surgical sessions, and follow-up appointments, ensuring timely and effective care delivery.
  • Provide expert consultation for complex cases, including multidisciplinary team meetings and case reviews.
  • Manage the complete patient journey from initial assessment through to post-treatment follow-up and recovery.
  • Stay updated on the latest advancements in gynaecology and colposcopy, integrating new knowledge and techniques into clinical practice.

Equality and Diversity

  • Act as lead for Equality & Diversity in the Estates and Facilities department to ensure the development and effective implementation of a strategy, set of policies, procedures and monitoring and control systems are in place.

Personal and Staff Development

  • Work with HR to undertake recruitment, retention, performance management and development of staff in the team.
  • Work with the Recruitment Manager to establish connections with appropriate local, international and online communities to nurture a pipeline of talent to support the growth of the company.
  • Responsible for development of high potential employees, providing a structured approach to mentoring and developing critical talent at all levels of management.

Communications And Working Relationships

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues in oncology, pathology, radiology, and primary care to coordinate patient care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families, providing clear explanations, compassionate support, and guidance throughout the care process.
  • Actively participate in departmental meetings, case discussions, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Collaborate with external organizations, such as cancer screening programs and public health initiatives, to improve community health outcomes.

Line Management

  • Provide line management and supervision to junior medical staff, including performance reviews, mentorship, and professional development.
  • Oversee the work of the nursing team within the colposcopy and gynaecology departments, ensuring adherence to standards and protocols.
  • Assist in the recruitment, training, and retention of staff within the department, ensuring a high level of expertise and patient care.
  • Manage departmental resources effectively, including equipment, supplies, and staffing, to ensure operational efficiency.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the Head of Clinical Director General Medical and Surgical Services or relevant senior management.
  • Contribute to organizational goals by participating in hospital-wide committees, initiatives, and projects.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, and patient-centered care within the department and across the organization.
  •  Represent the department at internal and external meetings, conferences, and professional networks, advocating for best practices in gynecology and colposcopy.

Confidentiality

The post holder must be aware that Confidential Information and data to which the post holder will have knowledge and access to in the course of their employment with the AMCE is to be kept confidential, and this confidentiality is a condition of employment. The duty to maintain confidentiality continues even when the post holder is no longer employed.

This information is not to be shared with anyone outside of the AMCE under any circumstances, except to the extent necessary to fulfil any duties and responsibilities required within the role. Furthermore, upon termination with the AMCE Abuja, the post holder will return to the AMCE all confidential information held.

The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and well-being and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post. 

To observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of AMCE together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.

To observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients, staff and visitors.

To be responsible, with management support, for their own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.

The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to make to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role. These requirements are set out in the AMCE Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures, which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training. These standards must be strictly complied with at all times.

About Us

African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced the commencement of its African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) project in Abuja, Nigeria.
